Kami Rita Sherpa from Nepal climbed Mount Everest for the 28th time on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2023, making it the most times for an individual to have climbed the highest mountain above sea level in the world. The previous record was held by non-other than Kami Rita himself. His last ascent, number 27 โ a record at the time โ was just six days previous. He has been breaking his own record since 2018 when he broke the world record of then 22 ascents, earning him the nickname โEverest Man.โ
Kami Rita Sherpa first climbed Mount Everest in 1994, and since then, climbed it almost every year, except in 2014, 2015, and 2020, when climbing was not possible. In 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2019 he climbed the legendary peak twice in the short May window. The 53-year-old is a senior guide with Seven Summit Treks, a climbing company. He made this weekโs climb to Mt Everest while accompanying a foreign climber.
This 28th Everest ascent also means that Kami Rita Sherpa has a total of 41 ascents over 8,000m under his belt. Aside from Mt Everest, which measures 8,848m (29,031ft), he has climbed amongst other peaks Cho-Oyu in Nepal a total of eight times, which measures 8,188m (26,864ft).
