Chilean emergency responders successfully rescued a driver trapped under an avalanche on a mountain road near Santiago on Saturday, June 22.
The rescue occurred on Route G-251 in Valle Nevado, where a fierce blizzard created hazardous conditions. Emergency teams battled through deep snowfall to reach the scene.
Footage at the site shows dedicated officers shoveling snow from an overturned vehicle. The freed driver was visibly shaken but relieved.
An unusually severe cold front is sweeping across parts of South America. The Chilean Meteorological Agency reported that May 2024 has been the coldest since 1950.
Record-breaking May snow caused two South American resorts to delay their official opening days. Valle Nevado opened three weeks early on May 31 after a massive storm dumped almost six feet of snow.
