VIDEO: Tremper Is An Avalanche Dog At Mt. Rose | A Hero In The Snow

For Tremper, a search-and-rescue dog, every day at home starts the same way. “He needs his daily snuggles,” says Andrew, Tremper’s human partner and an avalanche forecaster. But when Tremper puts on his work vest, he becomes a full-time hero patrolling avalanche terrain on Mt. Rose, near Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Tremper is part of a team of dogs that helps save lives. Avalanche-related deaths have risen substantially in recent decades, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, as skiers and snowmobilers with faster and lighter gear seek fresh, untouched slopes. Avalanche threats don’t deter people from places like Mt. Rose. And that means search-and-rescue dog Tremper must work harder to keep people safe.
