It has been three weeks since the last snowfall in Wanaka, New Zealand, which granted both Treble Cone and Cardrona half a meter of snow (19 inches). Unfortunately, the temperatures rose during that time, causing the snow to either be slick and firm or soft and slushy (not to mention slowly melting). On-piste skiing has been excellent, but off-piste skiing has become challenging by the day.
There have been large amounts of precipitation West of New Zealand that have been pushed East towards the Pacific. Currently, the only snow Wanaka expects is 1 centimeter (0.3 inches) over the weekend, according to Snow-Forecast.
While the warm front has been around, the fluctuation in temperatures between hot and cold hasn’t been extreme. This has made back-country access very safe across the region. Since July 10, Wanaka has sat at the lowest danger rating on the NZ Avalanche Advisory, with no avalanches observed or recorded to date. If going out, do check the forecasts and make yourself aware of any risks and hazards.
Although there hasn’t been snowfall recently, the Cardrona Parks Crew has been working hard to get the Freestyle Park open. Within the ski area, there are three separate parks, allowing a solid progression base for all levels. The Half-pipe is still awaiting more snow before it can be groomed and maintained for the Winter Games in August.
