Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, renowned for its world-class ski terrain and breathtaking mountain scenery, is taking a bold step to redefine its summer offerings. In response to the indefinite closure of summer skiing on the Horstman Glacier, the resort has announced the construction of a massive lift-accessed skate park on the upper slopes of Whistler Mountain. This groundbreaking project, set to be the largest of its kind, is part of Whistler Blackcombโ€™s long-term strategy to adapt to climate change and diversify its summer attractions.

A New Era for Summer Activities

For decades, the Horstman Glacier on Blackcomb Mountain was home to summer skiing and training camps, drawing elite athletes and recreational skiers alike. However, due to glacial recession and deteriorating snow conditions, the resort confirmed that summer ski operations would be canceled indefinitely. Rather than leaving a void in its summer programming, the resort has committed to investing in a new experience that will attract action sports enthusiasts from around the world.

The Ultimate Lift-Accessed Skate Park

The skate park will be approximately 1,700 feet long and cover 450 vertical feet. It will be strategically located near the Peak Express chairlift, with convenient access from the Whistler Village Gondola. Visitors will walk down the Peak Express Traverse from the Roundhouse Lodge to access the park. Unlike any other skate park, this high-alpine facility will be lift-served, allowing skaters and BMX riders to maximize their time on the parkโ€™s unique downhill terrain without having to hike back to the top every time.

The park will feature a variety of sections designed to accommodate all skill levels, including:

  • Massive Flow Sections: Winding, banked transitions and rolling hills that mimic the feel of a snowboard or surf session.
  • Street Plaza Elements: Rails, ledges, and stair sets inspired by iconic urban skate spots.
  • Mega Ramps and Vert Bowls: Designed for advanced skaters looking to push their limits.
  • Beginner and Intermediate Zones: Ensuring accessibility for newcomers to the sport.

Sustainable Development and Multi-Season Use

A key element of the project is the construction of a brand-new, all-season lift to replace the existing T-bar in the area. This new lift will serve both winter and summer operations, improving access for skiers and snowboarders during the winter months while seamlessly transitioning to support skate park users in the summer.

Given its high-alpine location, the skate park will be buried under snow each winter. However, as spring arrives, dedicated crews will begin the process of clearing the park, ensuring it is ready for use by June each year. This approach aligns with Whistler Blackcombโ€™s goal of maximizing terrain use while minimizing environmental impact.

Construction Timeline and Future Vision

Construction is set to begin in the summer of 2025, with the first phase focusing on earthworks, foundational structures, and lift installation. The park is expected to have a partial opening by August 2026, with full completion ready for June 2027.

Whistler Blackcomb sees this project as a long-term investment in the future of summer tourism. As climate change continues to impact traditional ski seasons, the resort is prioritizing sustainable, year-round attractions. By building this state-of-the-art skate park, Whistler Blackcomb aims to solidify its reputation as a premier action sports destination, not just in the winter, but throughout the entire year.

The decision to build a lift-accessed skate park at such a grand scale marks an exciting new chapter for Whistler Blackcomb. While the loss of summer skiing is bittersweet, the resortโ€™s proactive approach to climate adaptation ensures that future generations will continue to experience thrilling mountain adventures. With construction beginning soon, anticipation is already building for what is set to become one of the most iconic summer action sports destinations in the world.
