It is safe to say that April has been the best month of the season for powder.ย It has been going off in Whistler for the last two weeks, with deep storms and cold temperatures compared to the rest of the winter. The alpine has been awesomeย with new snow every couple of days. ย There has been some wind with these most recent storms making some pockets super deep, while other ridges are icy and have variable snow.ย Crowds have been pretty small during the weekdays, and not too bad on the weekends either.ย This week there have been more people on the mountain and in the bars due to WSSF (World Ski and Snowboard Festival).
With WSSF there are many events and competitions happening in the village and on the mountain.ย Be sure to check them out.ย Also on the weekend there are demo tents at the top of the Whistler Gondi if you are trying to test out some new gear.
Today I toured off of Blackcomb and found some of the best turns I have had all winter.ย Cold, deep, and light snow was a real treat to have during April.ย As I mentioned earlier, there are some wind-blown pockets that have the potential to slide with this new storm slab.ย Yesterday, in the backcountry I saw a snowboarder get caught in an avalanche with about a 400ft wide crown line, so be careful out there.ย Also be aware that temperatures are expected to rise by tomorrow and for the remainder of the week.
Reminder that Blackcomb will be closed after Sunday, the 19th and Whistler plans to remain open for another month.
