This comes from someone who has skied all 23 of the 2024-25 operating Mitten resorts…
In February 2024, I completed my seven-year quest to ski all 23 operating ski areas in the Mitten (lower half of Michigan). This includes at least multiple rope tows,ย as some areas do not have chairlifts. Now that these resorts will be opening in the coming days, here is a guide to help you decide on locations for your winter travels.
In the guide criteria, I made holistic decisions based on my experiences. Simply looking at statistics does not cut it. Each resort has its own unique charms and challenges. Here are the six main categories that were considered:
- Statistics: verticle/acerage/lifts/snowfall
- Quality of staff: people make a resort, some areas are more welcoming than others
- Crowds: crowded lifts make or break many places
- Facilities: indoor/infrastructure/lift age/quality
- Location: views/accessibility
- Pricing:ย $150 to ski a day in Michigan at some areas, while others are $25

Final Thoughts
A smaller resort offers a more personalized experience compared to larger, busier ski areas. While you might find yourself waiting in line at popular spots, a smaller resort like Mt. McSauba allows for more direct interactions, even with the manager.
In Michigan, law enforcement is known for being especially vigilant during the winter months. Be mindful of your speed, particularly in northern areas where speed limits can quickly drop from 75 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour.
Michigan is a vast state, and travel times can be long, especially during winter. For instance, driving from Ann Arbor to Copper Harbor can take over 11 hours in winter conditions. Despite this, some of the best skiing is located within the Mitten, especially with resorts and services easily accessible and the Mackinaw Bridge closures to consider.
Feel free to comment below if there are areas Iโve missed. Unfortunately, more than half of Michiganโs ski resorts have closed over the past 50 years.
