Search and rescue crews are currently searching for 2 missing men in their 30s whose canoe reportedly capsized Friday afternoon. ย
Wind and large waves were likely the cause of the canoe tipping over. ย Waves and whitecaps of 2-3 feet were reported on Donner Lake Friday afternoon.
Water temperature in Donner Lake is currently a frigid 40ยบF.
โThe victims, two males in their 30s, were visiting the Truckee area and staying along Donner Lake at a cabin. ย Truckee Police is in contact with family and friends of the victims and are keeping them updated.โ – Truckee Police Department
According to the Truckee Police Department, they received a call at 4:45pm on Friday that 2 men in a canoe had capsized. ย The Truckee Police Department and the Truckee Fire Protection District sent rescue personnel to Donner Lake with boats, divers, underwater cameras, sonar, and a helicopter to search the lake.
The canoe capsized in the northeast corner of Donner Lake. ย That area of the lake is very deep and holds complex underwater terrain. ย The water is also damn cold right now.
Crews searched for the 2 missing men on Friday until dark when the search was suspended until morning due to high winds and large waves. ย The search has resumed this morning.
California Highway Patrol Air Operations, Nevada County Sheriffโs Office Search and Rescue, Placer County Sheriffโs Office Marine Unit and the Truckee Fire Dive Team are all assisting in the search and rescue operation that is now most likely going to be a recovery operation.
