The massive Jumbo Glacier Resort project in British Columbia, Canada has officially been stopped due to their Environmental Certificate expiring on October 12, 2014. ย Without this certification, Jumbo Glacier Resort cannot continue their project and would have to start the permitting process all over again. ย The decision came on Friday via Canada’sย Minister of the Environment, Mary Polak.
“Accordingly, the environmental assessment certificate expired on October 12, 2014.” – Mary Polak, Minister of the Environment on June 18th, 2015
The reason for the expiration of the environmental certificate is that Jumbo did not getย substantially started after 10 years.
Jumbo Glacier Resort would have been:
- North America’s largest ski resort
- North America’s longest vertical dropย
- North America’s only year round ski resort
- Canada’s highest elevationย ski resort
Jumbo Glacier Resort Stats:
- The only year-round ski area in North America & one of only three such resorts worldwide
- The top lift height of 11,217 feet would have been be the highest in Canada
- Jumbo would have hadย 5,627ย vertical feet, the most in North America by a foot over Revelstoke
- In summer, Jumbo wouldย have had 2,300 verticalย feet on 1,500 acres of glaciers
- Some $15-20 million a year in construction activity for a period of twenty years would have beenย expected until buildout
- $450 million is the proposed cost of the Jumbo ski resort project
The environmental group who has been fighting the development, Jumbo Wild, celebrated the victory with this statement:
“Today, the BC government announced that the Jumbo Glacier Resortโs Environmental Certificate has expired. Charged with making a determination as to whether the project had been substantially started after 10 years, Minister Polak concluded that it had not been. What does that mean? That the project no longer has an Environmental Certificate and cannot proceed.” – Jumbo Wild on June 19th, 2016
