Snowing right now in Catedral

25 days till the beginning of the season. Most ski areas in Argentina and Chile are still brown. The little snow which had fallen has already melt, except for some higher peaks. But delicately, temperatures start to decrease. That’s good news. Winter approaches slowly. Snow is just around the corner. Forecast is encouraging for the Central Andes, specially for Chile. Some snow is falling further south. Everything is ready for this 2016 season. Now, its just a matter of pacience and a bit of good luck!

CERRO CASTOR, ARGENTINA

Cerro Castor is the Sothernmost ski resort in the world. It has almost no snow at the moment. However, low temperatures are enabling artificial snow making today. Snow is forecasted to start falling Friday next week. Here some photos of the last few days:

CERRO CATEDRAL (BARILOCHE), ARGENTINA

Cerro Catedral is one of the best ski resorts in Argentina and South America. Actually it has very little snow. The good news is that now, yes, right now, its snowing at the top. Here, some photos:

CHAPELCO, ARGENTINA

Chapelco has also very little snow at the moment. Forecast is a bit better than for Catedral. The problem is that it will snow at the top, but rain at the base. However, we’re still awaiting for the big storm. Here, some pictures:

LAS LEÑAS, ARGENTINA

If this was a race, Las Leñas had already won by far. Two big storms covered the resort with a good amount of snow in the last weeks. Eventhough high temperatures and sunny days melted most of it at the bottom of the mountain, ski patrollers at Las Leñas sustain that, at the upper section of the resort, the’ve already got more than 6-feet of snow, and are working hard to conserve it. Besides, there is a big storm forecasted for next week and Las Leñas is supposed to get a bit of it.

VALLE NEVADO, LA PARVA and EL COLORADO, CHILE

We’ve grueped this three resorts together because of their proximity between one and other. Right now, they have some snow. But they also have some great news. The storm we’ve mentioned before is supposed to deliver more than 11-Feet of snow to these resorts in the next week. Insane, isn’t it?

PORTILLO, CHILE

Actually we don’t have any pictures from Portillo right now. However, the forecast is also encouraging. Seems next week we will have some powder reports!

  1. What sort of season is it shaping up to be? Seems like the north of Chile has snow but what about the south? When is expected to dump?

    1. The Central Andes resorts such as Portillo, Valle Nevado, La Parva and El Colorado, all of them in Chile, have a good amount of snow. Las Leñas had recieved a huge snowfall but rain washed most of it. Southern resorts, such as Catedral, Chapelco or Castor, are literally out of snow. However, snow is expected before the end of June.
