SNOW caused the Montana Department of Transportation to CLOSE 10,947′ Beartooth Pass on US-212 today at 6:25am MST for the 4th time in 30 days.  The closure is at Stateline on the Wyoming side.

Beartooth Pass will remain closed until further notice.

“BEARTOOTH PASS IS CLOSED FROM STATE LINE TO VISTA POINT.  THE ROAD IS SNOWCOVERED, CURRENTLY SNOWING WITH POOR VISIBILITY AND BLOWING & DRIFTING.”

NOAA has issued a Winter Storm Warning (the 1st of the 2016/17 winter season) for Beartooth Pass, MT that calls for heavy snowfall today.

* IMPACTS...HEAVY SNOWFALL WILL MAKE OUTDOOR RECREATION DIFFICULT
  OR IMPOSSIBLE IN THE HIGH COUNTRY. BEARTOOTH PASS WILL BE
  IMPACTED BY ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL.

* SNOW ACCUMULATION...10 TO 15 INCHES...GREATEST ABOVE 8000 FEET.

US-212 Beartooth Pass also closed due to heavy snow on August 24th, 2016,  September 5th, 2016, and September 12th, 2016, and September 24th 2016.

Beartooth Pass has been closed five times in the past 40 days and we’re only 11 days into Fall 2016!

Snow is forecast all over North America this week including California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.

Montana is currently under a Winter Storm Warning – the first of the 2016/17 winter season – with 10-15″ of snow forecast.

There is a summer only ski resort up on Beartooth Pass (Beartooth Basin) that hasn’t been able to get open due to a lack of snow the past 2 summers.
