Today, CalTrans announced that due to snowy weather, the will not be opening Tioga Pass tomorrow.
Caltrans has stated that they’re keeping the pass closed due to unstable hillsides.
“With the temperatures below freezing at night and then thawing during the day make the hillsides unstable and cause rock fall. It is not safe for the traveling public. Safety is our number one concern.” – Caltrans, today about Tioga Pass closure
Caltrans will reassess the weather and road next week and make the call wether they can open it from the east at some point next week.
Mammoth ski resort got 3-4″ of snow last night and it’s on and off snowing today.
“Due to storm activity, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has decided to postpone the opening of the lower gate on State Route 120 west to the Yosemite National Park entrance. Caltrans will reassess the weather and road conditions next week to determine if the highway is safe for the traveling public. For the latest highway information please visit the Caltrans QuickMap site at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).” – Caltrans, today
TIOGA PASS FORECAST:
The forecast at Tioga Pass looks pretty snowy until Monday.
Nice bike! The last couple years I’ve tried to catch the window when one can bike from the west side gate before the 120 opens to cars. Had hopes for this year, but it sounds like it’s up in the air. Thoughts?
