2 Backcountry Skiers Swept Away by Avalanche, Plunging 650 Feet to their Death near Klosters, Switzerland

Two backcountry skiers were swept away by an avalanche, falling 650 feet off the mountain face into the valley near Klosters, Switzerland, on Friday, March 22. The pair was killed on impact and authorities could only confirm their death.

On Friday afternoon, two backcountry skiers were caught by avalanches as they were making their way from the Silvretta hut towards Klosters. The duo departed around noon on Friday. As they were crossing a steep slope in the area of Sintersiten, several avalanches were triggered The pair was swept off the rock face and thrown into the valley, falling approximately 650 feet to the valley. Both skiers, a 54-year-old man and a 57-year-old man from Bern, were fatally injured.

Members of the Alpine Rescue Graubünden as well as the REGA, the Alpine Air Ambulance, and members of the Alpine Police were deployed in the search and rescue.

The Graubünden Public Prosecutor’s Office, together with the cantonal police, has started the investigation into this avalanche accident.
