A man was attacked by two grizzly bears on Sunday, May 19, near the Signal Mountain area of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. It is the first verified bear attack of the season. The victim was identified as a 35-year-old man from Massachusetts. He was flown via helicopter to St. Johnโ€™s Hospital in Jackson, Wyoming, and is in a stable condition as of Monday morning, May 20, according to Grand Teton National Park Chief of Staff Jeremy Barnum.

Grand Teton National Park Rangers were alerted on Sunday afternoon of a visitor who was injured in a presumed incident involving a bear in the area of the Signal Mountain Summit Road.ย Grand Teton National Park Rangers and Teton County Search and Rescue personnel rushed to the scene and provided emergency medical care. The man was airlifted via helicopter to an ambulance and from there taken to hospital.ย Though officials are still investigating, they believe the attack came from a โ€œsurprise encounter with two grizzly bearsโ€ on Signal Mountain Summit Road. Officials believe only one of the bears mauled the 35-year-old man.ย The Signal Mountain Summit Road and Signal Mountain Trail are currently closed to all public entry.

Only six bear attacks have been recorded in the Grand Teton National Park since 1994. None of those bear attacks were fatal.
