A U.S. TikTok influencer has been going viral for proving that some international skiing destinations may be much less expensive than staying in the country. So you’re convinced; you’ve booked your flights and the date is getting closer. Here’s a list of seven essentials not to forget if you’re going abroad this winter:

#1 Your Ski Pass

Ikon and Epic have been adding new international resorts every year. Make sure to check your pass access, as you could save some money abroad by skiing with your U.S. ski pass. Also, beware of some schemes at Epic destinations like Verbier, where you must stay in specific lodging options to get lift tickets included with your pass. Skiing is much less expensive abroad, so for those of us on a budget, you will likely be better off staying in reasonably priced accommodation and purchasing inexpensive lift passes each day.

#2 Classy Clothing

Everyone has their own style but outside of the U.S., it is common for people to dress much more classy and formal. Some places around international towns may even have dress codes that are not common in North America.

#3 Phone Plans

Imagine not being able to use for phone for a week!

Remember to purchase a SIM card on arrival or call your provider and get on an international plan. Many providers have cracked down on roaming fees but still offer better rates if you switch to a specific bulk plan rather than a pay-by-day scheme. It may be convenient to stay on your domestic plan, but you will likely be paying for an entire month abroad in about two to three days of use. Time to learn how WhatsApp works!

#4 Portable Charger

If you’ve never been abroad, you will find yourself relying on your phone. Apps like Google Maps, Rome2Rio, and FATMAP are essentials. You’ll likely use these to get around the train systems and bus systems and figure out the complex ski trail maps. Outside of the US, missing the last lift could leave you hours from your accommodation, sometimes even in a different country. Having your phone die on you could leave you stranded with a language barrier. So make sure that phone is charged!

#5 Cash

In Western Europe, most places take Visa, but you will get a better exchange rate if you plan in advance to order Euros or Swiss Francs from your bank. You can do this for the market exchange rate and get up to 20% more for your money than exchange scams at airports.

#6 Skis/Board

Okay, this one is pretty obvious, but if you travel with your equipment often, take it with you! On most airlines, it will cost the same as a domestic trip. No reason to use rental equipment if you already have a setup personalized to you!

#7 Backcountry Kit

For anyone who regularly skis in the backcountry, there are great places to explore outside of North America. In some, like the Aiguille du Midi in France, lifts drop you in backcountry zones without access to groomed pistes. In many ski areas, avalanche patrol is not completed on ungroomed terrain. This is much different than American culture, so it would be smart to remember your beacon, shovel, and probe if you’re planning to go off-piste.
