A huge storm in Utah left Alta with so much snow, they couldn’t open today. On what would have been their third day this season, Alta decided to remain closed for the safety of their skiers.

After our morning of work, this great storm is still ahead of us. We are going to continue control work and grooming this afternoon and remain closed for skiing. We plan on opening Monday morning at 9:15. We are sorry you had to miss skiing today! – Alta

This early in the season, Alta is likely understaffed and just doesn’t have enough patrollers to perform avalanche control in a big storm like this. Remote sensors are reporting over 2 feet of fresh powder.

Alta reported this morning on their Facebook page that they might be able to open for the afternoon, but the constant snowfall was too much for them to keep up. They announced around 1pm that they would not be opening.

While Alta wants to share killer early conditions with its guests, skier safety is obviously paramount. Expecting 3 – 5 more inches tonight, they fully intend to welcome skiers to enjoy the snow first thing tomorrow. A long and hopefully safe season is ahead.

11″ in the past 12 hours. 22″ in the past 24 hours. And a storm total of 25″. Not bad for opening weekend, huh?  See you tomorrow, skiers! – Alta at 6:30pm MST
