Summit County, CO โ Nov. 18, 2024โThe Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol announced today its decision to file for union representation with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). As Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol takes this important step to secure a stronger, collective voice in the workplace, it seeks to join nearly 1,000 ski patrollers and lift maintenance unionized crew members at 12 resorts across the Mountain West Region, including Colorado, Montana, Washington, and Utah.
The decision to unionize follows months of discussions among ski patrol professionals about improving working conditions, compensation, and the overall well-being of the staff. The staff is responsible for ensuring the safety of thousands of visitors to the iconic ski area each year. The ski patrollers seek a fair and transparent negotiation process and value a positive, collaborative relationship with Arapahoe Basin Ski Area management as they move forward.
โThe union will guarantee that we have a voice at the table to negotiate for what is important to us as a staff. We hope to work closely with management to ensure we receive the benefits, compensation, and respect we deserve for our hard work. We also hope that our communityโboth in Summit County and the surrounding areasโwill come together to support the values and goals we stand for.โ
– Kali Flaherty, Arapahoe Basin Ski Patroller
Alan Henceroth, Arapahoe Basin COO, told SnowBrains, “Arapahoe Basin is an extraordinary resort that has been providing incredible experiences for our guests and employees for almost 80 years. We take pride in being a transparent and equitable employer and are committed to continuing that while we work through this process with our Ski Patrol.”
CWA Local 7781, a leader in organizing ski area workers, will assist the Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol in securing representation and negotiating a contract that reflects the important work they perform and the challenges they face in the demanding ski patrol environment.
