NOAA: “Why Winter Canโt Quite Quit New England & Wonโt Give the West a Second Glance” A stalled atmospheric set-up has made Boston and surrounding areas in the Northeast the most popular truck stop for storms travelling the atmospheric highway known as the jet stream. And stop they have, like a caravan of tractor-trailers idling in a rest stop parking lot. The record books in Boston were completely rewritten […] Weather Guest Author | February 26, 2015 1 Comment
Northern B.C., Canada Heli Conditions Report: Working for a heli skiing outfit has its perks. A few times a year I have the opportunity to leave my desk and travel North to enjoy some fresh turns with guests from around the globe. My experience this February was a little more special than usual. I traveled to Bell 2 Lodge with two long-time friends Greg Foster and Dave MacDonald [check out Dave’s video below] โ both first time heli skiers. Our main objective was a photo mission to capture imagery from Bell 2 lodge, but we also managed to take advantage of some stunning days in the mountains. Taos, New Mexico Conditions Report: This was a great weekend for Taos ski area in northern New Mexico. Snow came in Saturday afternoon and is still falling over the Sangre de Cristo mountains. By Monday morning the ski area was reporting 17 inches with no end in sight until Friday. This much needed snow is coming only days before the Salomon Extreme Freeride Championship is about to begin on Thursday, Feb. 26th. As most of the west is suffering from a profound lack of snow, Taos has seen 100 inches […] Conditions Report Guest Author | February 26, 2015 0 Comments
Tahoe Backcountry Update: Good Snow Up High Tahoe is beyond magical. We are blessed to call this place home. Major perk: Winter is always on in Tahoe from November to May, itโs just a matter of how deep and how high one is willing to go. This season has been a sleeper up high and deep. Since the season kicked off, we have enjoyed over 24 powder days. Yes, multiple powder days in Tahoe this year. What truly defines a powder day? If you enjoy fast, steep, smooth, no ice turns with blower snow engulfing you on each turnโฆthen yes, I guess itโs a powder day. Eastern Sierra Backcountry Report & Video: It hasnโt snowed in weeks? months? years? I canโt even remember anymore. But hereโs the thing: sliding down snowy mountains is fun, even during a drought. The high elevation and crystal clear nights keep the snow in the High Sierra nice and wintery even when itโs tee shirt weather down in town. The crux is mustering up the motivation to get to it. While I havenโt been ski touring as much as usual this year, every time that I have gone out Iโve had a great time. On February 18, two friends and I set out to ride some chutes north […] Conditions Report Guest Author | February 22, 2015 0 Comments
Trip Report: Snow-Starved Californians Find Winter in Big Sky A crew of five snow-starved stragglers from California voyaged north in search of winter. They found it at Big Sky on Wednesday in a big Montana way. Super friendly and welcoming locals, fresh cold snow, bluebird conditions, and nearly the whole mountain open stoked the travelers in a big way. Fog cleared as we rolled in, revealing a calm and clear day at Big Sky. First order of business was rolling up the tram, accessing Lone Peak, the sign-in required Big Couloir (bring your avy gear for the Big), and lots of alpine steeps. The snow was excellent off the top. So we took a few more laps from the summit, and gawked at the […] Conditions Report Guest Author | February 17, 2015 4 Comments
Smugglers Notch Conditions Report – Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop After a windy, cold, and dry early January, snow started falling during the MLK holiday weekend. Since that initial foot, northern Vermont has been repeatedly blanketed by fast moving fronts generating up slope snow. The few large storms to hit New England this winter have been coastal, and deposited underwhelming amounts of snow in northern Vermont. Regardless, due to the persistent cold weather, the snow coverage all over northern Vermont is substantial. The backcountry is amazing and untracked powder is still abundant in-bounds due to the rapid pace of storms this […] Conditions Report Guest Author | February 16, 2015 0 Comments
