BC Backcountry Hut Report Day #1: Fast, Sluffy, Stable Powder in Stupendous Terrain

Report from January 3, 2024

Fourteen of us flew out to a remote backcountry hut in the Selkirk mountains of British Columbia, Canada, yesterday.

This is our 8th BC hut trip, and they’ve all been spectacular with great snow and terrific skiing.

Luck lead to us being the first group flown in.

After going over the hut functionality with the hut keeper, we blasted out into the zone in a dense fog.

The snow was good.

Really good.

Fast sluffy powder.

It’s also stable up here, which is rare for us.

Normally, we battle high avalanche danger on this trip keeping our skiing below treeline.

Yesterday, we couldn’t see much and decided to stick to our modus operandi of below-treeline skiing.

We got in 2 runs, and they both delighted with superb snow quality.

3.6 miles and 2,000 vertical feet later, we were sated and smiley.

Hut life hit hard with Saunas, home-cooked chili, cornbread, and raucous conversation.

This is my favorite trip of the year.

Thanks, Canada.
