Cowboy State Daily reports that the anticipated opening of the Beartooth Highway (US 212), WY/MT, has been further delayed after an avalanche struck the road this week.

The 68-mile highway, which climbs to 10,947 feet in elevation between Montana and Wyoming, was initially scheduled to open for the summer season on May 24. However, a late-season winter storm forced crews to postpone the opening.

Just days later, on Tuesday, an avalanche brought debris across the highway near Vista Point on the Montana side, prompting an immediate closure for repairs.

“It was a small avalanche that brought some debris down and did a little bit of damage to the road. But from what I’ve seen, it’s not significant.”

Despite the setback, Montana Department of Transportation officials remain optimistic that the highway can reopen this weekend if favorable weather conditions persist. “If they get this section cleared up, plan on the Beartooth Highway being open by Thursday afternoon,” Weamer added.

The Beartooth Highway is a coveted summer route, attracting visitors worldwide to experience its dramatic alpine scenery. Crews from Montana and Wyoming begin clearing the road of winter snow in April each year.

This year’s delayed opening follows the highway’s opening a week late in 2023 due to heavy spring snowfall.

Travelers are advised to check the latest road conditions and updates on the Montana and Wyoming transportation websites before embarking on the high-elevation journey.
