Berthoud Pass on U.S. Highway 40 reopened on Wednesday night, January 17, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. The pass had closed on Sunday, January 14, due to an avalanche that buried 10 cars.
Crews by the Colorado Department of Transportation (โCDOTโ) have worked around the clock since Sunday to safely reopen the roadway. High winds, fresh snow, and new slides delayed the reopening several times, resulting in what was ultimately a four day closure.

CDOT would like to advise motorists that travel on Berthoud Pass in the early morning of Thursday, January 18, may be impacted by short closures for winter maintenance operations. The closure is anticipated to start at 5:30 a.m. If no debris reaches the roadway the closure will last approximately 15 minutes.
With another winter storm moving across Northwestern Colorado, further disruptions can be ย expected on Berthoud Pass. Heavy snow and wind are anticipated to affect road conditions, potentially causing delays. CDOT strongly encourages drivers to check real-time road conditions at COtrip.org and weather forecasts before traveling. Motorists should drive to conditions and plan for lowered speeds.
