After decades of service and countless laps, Coloradoโs oldest operating-ski lift is about to take its final ride. Sunlight Mountain Resort is preparing to say goodbye to Segundo, a two-seater lift with a legacy that dates back to 1954, on Friday, March 28. Originally installed in Aspen before relocating to Sunlight in 1973, Segundo has quietly carried skiers and snowboarders up the west side of the mountain for more than 50 years.
To mark the occasion, Sunlight is throwing Segundo a proper sendoff. Colorado Public reports that the resort will host โSegundo Dayโ on Friday, March 28, a celebration that includes live music, giveaways, and one last chance to ride the storied lift. The event runs from 4 to 6:30 p.m., and Segundo will spin all day long. Season and day pass holders can attend at no extra charge, while others can snag a special Segundo Day pass for $20. Sunlight Mountain will then close for the 2024-25 season.
The decision to retire Segundo comes as part of a major infrastructure overhaul. After this season, Sunlight will replace the lift with a modern triple chair. Primo, another classic fixed-grip double thatโs been hauling skiers to the summit since 1966, will also be removed to make way for a new quad. According to the resort, the upgrades are part of the largest investment in its history and will increase lift capacity for future seasons. The resort plans later to sell off the chairs, likely turning up on porches and in backyards throughout Glenwood Springs and beyond. And while its chairs may stop spinning, Segundoโs place in Colorado ski history is immortalized.
