Beartooth Highway remained closed.

The opening of the Beartooth Highway (US-212), located east of Yellowstone Park’s Northeast entrance between Red Lodge, Montana, and Cooke City was delayed this weekend. The Montana side to Vista Point near mile marker 49 opened as planned.

The highway was scheduled to open on Friday, May 24, but remained closed through the weekend due to winter weather, significant snowfall, and hazardous driving conditions.

A winter storm warning was in effect for the area with a forecast for heavy snowfall of 1-2 feet with winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

Temporary travel restrictions or closures can occur at any time without notice. Have flexible travel plans and watch for quickly changing weather conditions.

The highway will open to the public as soon as conditions allow. Check for road status and updates on the Montana and Wyoming Department of Transportation websites.
