Fatal Collision of 2 Foreign Skiers in Kitzsteinhorn Ski Area, Austria

On Monday, April 29, around 2:10 p.m. two skiers collided in the ski area Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun, Austria, leaving one skier dead and one injured.

For reasons yet to be understood, a frontal collision between a 66-year-old Czech national and a 53-year-old Dutch national ended with the death of the Czech skier. Despite immediate first aid measures by bystanders and ski patrol, the emergency doctor of the rescue helicopter “Martin 1” could only determine the death of the 66-year-old man.

The female skier from the Netherlands was flown to a hospital in Zell am See with unidentified injuries. The wife of the deceased was a witness to the accident and was looked after by a crisis intervention team.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occured at the bottom of two t-bars in the heart of the ski area, in a known blind spot.ย 

The Salzburg Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation, including an autospy of the deceased.
