The United States is home to great ski resorts that allow skiers and riders to find any terrain to choose from. Across the country, there are large and small resorts, conglomerate resorts, and independently owned resorts. This can make choosing which ski resort(s) to visit each season difficult for a person, but it also provides a variety of options for skiers and riders to pick from.
What if that decision was made a lot simpler by owning a ski resort? That is probably a dream of every snow sports enthusiast in the world. That dream could be a reality for someone with the announcement this week that St. Mary’s Glacier Resort in Colorado is now available to be purchased. Less than an hour from the Denver metro area, the resort is for sale for $7 million.
The resort sits on 372 acres bordered by the protected Arapaho National Forest, which preserves the area’s natural wildlife and resources. St. Mary’s Glacier is a four-season resort that provides excellent backcountry skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and hiking. It has a summit of 9,760 feet, a base elevation of 8,500 feet, a vertical drop of 1,260 feet, and three lifts. It is technically not a glacier but a semi-permanent snowfield and is home to numerous outdoor and recreational sports in the Rocky Mountains.
Saint Mary’s Glacier Resort opened in the 1930s and closed in 1986. It was known to locals as the place to escape the crowds. It is easily accessible from the I-70 corridor going west from Denver and provides an environment for families to go with their children for a day of skiing. It is geared towards beginner and intermediate skiers but has terrain for excellent backcountry skiing. There was a proposal in 2002 to reopen the ski resort by SnoEngineering, but that never materialized.
St. Mary’s Glacier is a resort that is part of Colorado’s history, where skiers and riders hit the mountain to find the best lines and terrain. It was a great alternative to larger resorts known for having huge crowds, traffic congestion, and being more expensive. There was a small ski rental shop and some rustic cabins to rent back in the day, providing the vibe of that classic Colorado ski culture. If the price is right and you are looking for a piece of Colorado’s history, this resort would be the one for you.
