An old treasure to the state of New Hampshire and once a frequent destination for skiers and riders of the Northeast has gone back on sale at a bargain price of $3.2 million. The mountain, once known as Whittier Mountain, sits on 797 lush acres of New England forest, with most of its nostalgic trails now overgrown. With the demand for new ski destinations increasing, your chance to bring the historic landmark back from the dead is now.

A series of unfortunate events led the once-popular ski destination to close in 1985. Its steep terrain repelled less skilled skiers from making the mountain their destination of choice. Coupled with a few warmer seasons, an absence of snowmaking and untimely local interstate construction forced visitors elsewhere. An attempt at a resurgence came in the 2000s. Whittier Mountain became an adventure park providing year-round activities, including mountain biking, summer camps, backcountry skiing, and tubing. Alas, the project failed, and the mountain again became vacant of visitors.

With a track record of sustained success absent, Whittier Mountain has sat unwanted of further development going on two decades. Joe Robinson and Chris Norwood (both of NAI Norwood Group, Inc.) represent the Sellers of the former ski mountain in bringing it to market. Both New Hampshire natives, they are fond of the outdoors and have skied and hiked many of the mountains in New Hampshire. Norwood said,

“Joe and I decided to hike up the mountain before we took the assignment and it is a great hike. The views from the top rival some of my favorite short hikes in NH such as Mt. Willard and Mt. Major. While we never skied Whittier, we are excited to bring it to market. There are a number of potential uses for the land and we have already discussed the property with many different prospects from a good number of backgrounds.”

The rapid rise in backcountry skiing and riding might make this the perfect investment for those looking to create a place for low-traffic New England powder turns. Backcountry-specific resorts are popping up more frequently and might be the best chance of bringing this iconic mountain back from the dead. More information on the listing can be found on the NAI Norwood Group website.

  1. Don’t leave valuables in your car while skiing there, best to take everything out and unlock it to save from having your window smashed. Addicts live across the street from the parking area!

  2. As a neighbor to the mountain, I would love to see someone bring it back to life. I’ve been back country snowboarding down it and it is steep, but fun!
