The face of Bec des Rosses. You have your line memorized, right?
The finals of the 2014 Freeride World Tour have been set for this Saturday at 9am. The weather window for the Verbier event began on March 22, but competition has been delayed due to a storm moving through the area and low snow coverage going in to the weather window.
Recent storms have dropped heavy snowfall on Verbier and Bec Des Rosses, giving the venue a reset. With the 2014 FWT being plagued by low snow and instability, the Verbier will hopefully be a change from the challenging conditions that have been frustrating skiers this year. If the snowpack doesn’t set up by Saturday, Sunday is the last day of the weather window.

While waiting for the storm to subside the competitors were allowed to do an on-hill inspection of the course. These inspections are rare, this one was likely set up with the idea of a weekend competition, and give competitors a chance to get a closer look at snow conditions and features in the venue. Hopefully this will give competitors better knowledge of the terrain and their lines. Combined with the new snow, the conditions for this venue should be all-time, letting competitors choose their lines without worrying about hardpack.

Coming in to Verbier, the number one spot hasn’t been locked down yet.ย With 300 points separating first and second place, and less than 1,000 points separating first and third, its still a close field and interesting things can happen. First place runs are awarded 2,500 points, 2,200 for second, and 1,980 for 3rd. Scores don’t drop below 1,000 points until placements higher than 8th, making things very interesting. This should be a great stop to watch. ย After a strange ride for the FWT this year, hopefully Verbier will line up and set the stage with good snow and a challenging venue.
