Gaper Day at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, WY is legendary; often rowdy, always fun. But this year’s was on fire––literally.

A fire broke out near Sundance, under Bridger Gondola, around 5 pm, an hour after the lifts had stopped turning.

Photographs shared online show a column of smoke rising from the resort. A stack of downed trees was the fuel for the fire, but the cause is unknown. Thankfully the snow on the ground prevented the fire from spreading. The fire was quickly and safely contained, and on-mountain staff were attempting to completely extinguish it last night.

“We don’t know why it started. My first thought it was a controlled burn, but I don’t know anyone out there doing a controlled burn.”

– Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Chief Brady Hansen

The fire wasn’t the only incident to befall the resort yesterday. The Casper lift was closed early due to too many guests flouting the rules the resort had put in place, such as ‘no alcohol on lifts’ and covid-19 related restrictions.

“The Resort has worked tirelessly over the past year to keep visitors and staff healthy and safe. For this behavior to happen near the end of the season after all this hard work feels disrespectful. It’s really disappointing.”
