Grand Targhee Resort (GTR), Wyoming, announced that the CaribouTarghee National Forest has released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement, which outlines GTRโs plans to upgrade, enhance, and improve the ski experience at the resort. The Draft EIS is the product of many years of collaborative work by the U.S. Forest Service in consultation with GTR and the community. The projects evaluated in the Draft EIS, individually and collectively, aim to preserve and continue what is great about skiing and riding at Grand Targhee.
Grand Targhee designed the projects in the Draft EIS to upgrade and improve the ski areaโs existing facilities, terrain, and skiing conditions. The projects include lift upgrades and improvements, expanded snowmaking for reliable early-season conditions, grading at key points on the mountain, and upgraded and improved restrooms and other mountain facilities.
Proposed boundary adjustments will add the Mono Trees area near the Colter Lift and parts of South Bowl to GTRโs managed terrain network. Mono Trees is lower in elevation and presents high-quality advanced beginner and intermediate ski terrain in a location that will be subject to fewer weather holds than other parts of the mountain. GTRโs South Bowl proposal is scaled back and will provide outstanding skiing and riding with unique exposure and aspects. โGrand Targhee greatly values our partnership with the Forest Service,โ GTR General Manager Geordie Gillett said. โWeโve been in discussions with the Caribou-Targhee National Forest for several years about how to ensure GTR continues to provide a refuge for skiers and maintain our status as the premier powder skiing destination in the United States. The Draft EIS is an important milestone, and we look forward to continue to collaborate with the Forest Service and the community on the next phase of the EIS process.โ
GTR started the process with the Forest Service over six years ago when the Forest Service accepted GTRโs master development plan, which is the conceptual plan for the ski area in the coming years. Four years ago, the Forest Service announced its intent to prepare the Draft EIS. The document released this week discloses the agencyโs careful analysis of the potential effects of GTRโs proposal and alternatives.
The Forest Service announced a 90-day comment period on the Draft EIS. On April 17, 2025, the public will be invited to an open house to ask questions and submit comments on the proposal. The Draft EIS is a midway point in the Forest Serviceโs public decision-making process under the National Environmental Policy Act. After the comment period ends, the Forest Service will prepare and release a final EIS for public review before making a decision on GTRโs proposed projects. Grand Targhee Resort looks forward to progressing with these important projects. As each phase of this process evolves, GTR remains singularly focused on providing its guests with the worldโs best ski experience.
