Report from March 27th thru 30th, 2021

More often than not, there’s been a fair bit of sun, but there is wind too, and it pushes small clumps of fat clouds across the valley like fluffy airborne saltshakers dispensing modest powder snow as they go. Call it a cocktail of the seasons.

At Grand Targhee, the crew are basking under––while somewhat lamenting––a March that could be accurately summed up as bright and shiny. Make no mistake, friends, in many ways, that’s a good thing because there’s no hectic day yet invented that can’t be successfully set to ‘mellow’ with the help of a sun-drenched chair ride followed by a few slashes in the snow.

But before you break out the SPF50 as a matter of course, remember these are the Teton Mountains where Old Man Winter is the boss. When confidence has you convinced it’s all spring-fling ’til the end is exactly when a cold burst of winter punches in a hole those best-laid plans.

Cool wind has periodically kept that famous late-season corn on lockdown, and there’s even been the odd handful of fresh inches laid soft and lovely as you like. Getting those goods means getting up EARLY, but skiing powder snow is always worth something.

Following a couple of quick dashes of powder snow, the recently concluded weekend was a welcome “blue hole” as it was just in time to shed light on the always popular Teton Surf Classic. An annual favorite, the board-centric event showcased serious talent…as well as Targhee’s unique ‘vibe.’

‘Classic’ honorees include:

  • Naomi Gorringe – Girl Grom
  • Henry Hawkins – Boy Grom
  • Olive Gilbert – Women’s Teen
  • Benji Shaw – Men’s Teen
  • Marie Gauer – Women Amateur
  • Michael Herfurth – Men Amateur
  • Kyle Rose – Men’s Master
  • Olivia Kesterson – Women’s Pro
  • Cody Lee – Men’s Pro

And what’s on-deck? Why more of the same; today’s cold front is tomorrow’s warmer temps. And cloud with a tease of flurries is forecast to follow that. It’s a mixed bag––and that’s why we love it––because it’s hard not to be all-good when there’s skiing to be done at Grand Targhee Resort in the Tetons.
