Are the peaks in the east big enough to need a bird? Some critics are saying that heli-skiing has no place in terrain that’s easily accessible on skins.
If you’re shelling out hundreds for helicopter access, wouldn’t it be best to do it in the biggest mountains?
For those worried about their hallowed backcountry spots, have no fear – Heli Bear plans to use steepย logging routes and thinning steep bowls in the high country.ย By storm-chasing, heli-skiing right after abundant snowfall, Heli Bear will offer the best backcountry in the east.
Their two pioneering events this month were set to operateย out of Saddleback Resort, but Heli-Bear was asked last minute by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to obtain a permit for use (the AT runs along the top of Saddleback. They will return in 2016 with more mountains to offer – they’re working with over a dozen mountains to secure heli-ski access next season.ย
โSome say heli-skiing Saddleback, so what, we can already ski thatโฆ Well, the so what to that tired line is, why the hell not!! … The thrill and privilege of helicopter flight, while doing what you love most in the winter, at a gorgeous ski mountain overlooking the Rangeley Lakes and High Peakโs region, will become one of the best moments you and your friends ever make together,โ says Heli-Bear founder, Tom Massey.
We’re not sure if the east coast needs heli-skiing, but those who can afford it will be part of unprecedented access to Maine’s backcountry.ย
