The International Olympic Committee (โIOCโ) announced today, Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at its meeting in Paris, France, that Salt Lake City is its preferred host for the 2034 Winter Games and France is the preferred host for the 2030 Games. The preferred hosts will now move into targeted dialogues with the potential hosts for the finer details. It is not a final announcement but brings each host closer to being officially selected as host by the IOC.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall emphasized, โWhat this means is weโre just one step away from bringing the Winter Games back to Salt Lake City.โ Strong, local support for bringing back the Olympics and Paralympics to Salt Lake City was on full display on Wednesday at the Salt Lake City & County Building. Fraser Bullock, President & CEO of Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Salt Lake City Mayor Mendenhall, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, state representatives, and senators, Salt Lake City council members, as well as other leaders, mayors, and elected officials from across the Wasatch Front, had gathered to watch the live broadcast of the IOCโs announcement from Paris.
โThe decision of the IOC to invite Salt Lake City-Utah into Targeted Dialogue as the Preferred Host for 2034 is a credit to our communities working together to create a welcoming region for sport across our state,โ said Fraser Bullock. โFor more than a decade, our state and community leaders have united towards this goal. The IOC has recognized our high level of preparedness, with all venues in place and active, as well as overwhelming support from our political and business leaders.โ
The public is invited to join festivities on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 5:45-6:15 p.m. at Cauldron Plaza on the southwest corner of Rice-Eccles Stadium to celebrate Salt Lake City-Utah being well on the path to hosting the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
โThink of the next 10 years. Think of our kids headed to our training venues today. They’re our future. And now they’re going to be counting on going to the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as homegrown athletes.โ
