Get ready for an unforgettable winter in Japan. After nearly two years of construction, Iwatakeโs new gondola will open on December 20, 2024, and itโs a game changer.
Hakuba Japan
Home to 10 resorts with over 200+ runs and some of the best backcountry in Japan, the Hakuba Valley is one of Japanโs premiere ski destinations. Skiers and snowboarders looking to scratch that Japan powder itch need look no further than Hakuba. The Hakuba Happo One Snow Resort was home to several downhill racing events in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. More recently, Hakuba hosted the Free Ride World Tour. The Valley is renowned for its lift-accessible off-piste tree skiing and expansive backcountry.
Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort
Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort may have a shorter season than many of its Hakuba Valley counterparts, but itโs a top pick for snowboarders craving diverse and thrilling terrain. The mountain is packed with fun terrain features and hidden tree runs that keep you on your toes.
Over the past few years, the resort has made significant improvements to attract the Japanese summer market. Construction of Mountain Harbor, Chavity, and the Yoohoo Swing has Instagram lovers rushing to the mountain for that perfect shot. This increase in popularity has led to a major expansion project, adding a new gondola.

Hakuba Iwatakeโs new gondola is highly anticipated and will transform access to the slopes just in time for winter enthusiasts. The upgrades showcase Iwatakeโs commitment to becoming an all-season mountain resort, and we canโt wait to see its impact on visitors.
A New Era for Iwatake
This gondola isnโt just about getting to the top faster โ itโs a critical part of Iwatakeโs transformation into a world-class resort. The new lift gives quick access to some of the best slopes in the region, offering unbeatable views and incredible powder.
The new gondola is a significant upgrade. The new cabins will hold ten passengers and have glass walls offering panoramic views of the valley. The new gondola will travel at 6 m/s and has a capacity of 2,460 people per hour. The new base station has been under construction since the start of last winter.
But thatโs not all. The base area is being completely revamped. By the 2025-26 season, the old gondola station will become a hub with a ticket center, rental shops, restaurants, and the home of Iwatakeโs ski and snowboard school.
To top it off, Iwatake has announced a high-grade hotel with a planned completion date of 2030 is in the works. The luxury accommodations at the mountainโs base will offer ski-in, ski-out access, gourmet dining options, and top-of-the-line amenities.
Iwatake is gearing up to become the place to be this winter. Whether youโre a seasoned skier, a snowboarder, or just looking to soak in Japanโs winter beauty, the new gondola and upgraded facilities are designed to give you the best experience possible.
