Lake Tahoe, CA Backcountry Report: Some of The Deepest, Driest Snow We’ve Ever Skied Anywhere

Report from March 5, 2023

Yesterday was Sunday, I-80 was closed, the storm was strong, and we had a feeling Palisades Tahoe was gonna be busy…

So we opted for the Tahoe Winter Olympics!

4 Events:

  • Rowdy AF 4×4 Driving
  • Dig 1 Metric Ton of Snow as Fast as Possible
  • Competitive Hiking
  • Ridiculously Deep Powder Skiing

The road was a bit nutty…

We didn’t see any other cars until the very end.

Then we dug.

Then we hiked.

Then we skied…

We skied some of the deepest, driest snow I’ve ever skied anywhere.

The skiing was so incredibly good that we skied 4 laps and 5,000-vertical-feet.

Snow to the chest.

Snow over the shoulder.

Snow to the face.

Snow over the head.

All day.

Some of the facial expressions we exchanged at the bottom of these runs were just grotesque…

Joy, awe, stupefaction, and pure shit-eating-grin all wrapped in one.

We laughed a lot.

The road home was easy after 2 plows came through.

We ate at Za’s in Tahoe City and it was delightful.

  • Yinzer Pizza
  • Smoked Chicken Salad
  • Wings

The wings were the best wings I’ve had anywhere.

Crispy on the outside with a light pepper jelly glaze with some kinda homemade white dipping sauce.

Thanks, Tahoe.
