Report from December 23, 2023

Dobbs dragged me out to the Mt. Rose backcountry today.

I was exhausted after Benson & Hedges Couloir UT, Kessler Peak UT, & Terminal Cancer Couloir NV in 3 consecutive days.

He was adamant and I obeyed.

We drove up to the pass and parked at 10am.

We randomly ran into our buddy Jan who gave us some great beta and we were off.

There are a ton of tracks in this zone since it’s just about the only snowy place in Tahoe but if you’re willing to work hard or get creative, you can still find some very good snow.

We chose the later path.

We stumbled onto a neat little zone that I’d never seen before.

Short but sweet and no tracks.

Dobbs dropped first and ripped a cool double drop.

I went second and skied through the sediment rock towers.

The snow was superb.

We laughed.

I jolted with energy and skinned home much stronger than I’d skinned out.

We found more pow on our ski back to the road.

On our way home, Mt. Rose ski resort looked luscious.

There was one run that was clearly gonna be in the sun until the closing bell.

I took off one boot, jumped in my car, drove the 3 minutes to Mt. Rose ski area and jumped on the Lakeview Chair.

I skied that sunny run, Lone Tree, 5 times right until 4pm.

There was a fun little jump, a great groomer, then a neat mini park.

Today was a terrific day in Lake Tahoe.

Note:

  • We didn’t see any signs of instability in the snowpack

Thanks, Tahoe!
