Last August, Lee Canyon, Nevada, suffered extensive damage from Tropical Storm Hilary and had to cease all summer operations. Hurricane Hilary was a category 4 hurricane that brought torrential rainfall and wind gusts to the Pacific Coast of Mexico, the Baja California Peninsula, and the Southwestern United States in August 2023, resulting in flooding and mudslides across the affected areas. The images from the aftermath of the storm were astounding, with lifts half buried under rock, mud, and debris.

Based on the severe damage from the storm, many are wondering about the future of the operations for the 2023/24 ski season. One social media user commented on Lee Canyon’s Instagram post from September 12: “Those videos looked horrible you sure you’re gonna be open?” To every skeptic’s surprise, the short answer is: yes.

Since the storm, the resort has been hard at work cleaning up the mountain and making sure the mountain is ready to reopen for the upcoming ski season. Lee Canyon recently shared this message on their Instagram:

“The comeback has begun! The team is now hard at work up on the mountain, making sure that all the damage caused by the floods is cleaned up & repaired. It’s a tough job, but we’ve got an even tougher team at the wheel! 💪”

Last Saturday, the resort held its annual job fair and ‘Pray for Snow Party’ which was the first public event the resort has hosted since the storm.  Lee Canyon has completed its clean-up and is nearing the completion of the construction of a brand new chairlift named “Ponderosa.” The resort is slated to open sometime in late November or early December, depending on conditions.
