Levi Ski Resort in Finland has recorded the first snow of the 23/24 season. The resort is located close to the Arctic Circle and is as such fairly snow-proof. Each year the resort stores the spring snow over the summer, a practice referred to as ‘snow farming’, to guarantee an early October season opening.

This year the largest Finnish resort will open on October 6, 2023, in only 16 days, making it one of the first resorts in Europe to kick off the ski season. When the resort opens in early October, the Levi Glacier slope and early season park open on the Front Slopes will be operational, as well as free cross-country ski tracks with preserved snow adjacent to the Levi golf course.

Levi is also world-famous as host of the women’s FIS Alpine World Cup each year. It has been a staple on the race calendar for 18 years. The event consists of two slalom races and this year will take place from November 10 – 12, 2023.

Each year, the Levi slalom attracts the world’s best female athletes, and the winner famously is given a reindeer as a prize by Santa Claus. The world-famous Santa Claus village in Rovaniemi is only two hours away from Levi. Last year, U.S. ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin won her fifth and sixth Levi World Cup and extended her reindeer herd to six. The previous record had been held by Slovakia’s Petra Vlhová, who has a herd of five reindeer.
