Lindsey Vonn announced on Saturday that her mother has passed away following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

My sweet mother Lindy has lost her battle with ALS. She passed away peacefully as I held her hand, exactly one year after her diagnosis. I am so grateful for every moment I had with her but I am also thankful that she is no longer suffering and in peace. She was a shining light that will never fade and I will forever be inspired by her.

Linda Krohn, 80, was diagnosed with ALS a year ago.ย Also known as Lou Gehrigโ€™s disease, ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that has no cure. The disease destroys the bodyโ€™s nerve cells that control muscles that allow us to breathe, eat, speak, and walk.

Along with the announcement, Vonn shared several family photos.

Our thoughts are with Lindsey and her family right now.
