Mammoth Mountain, California, has provided an update on the replacement of the old Broadway Express (Chair 1). Mammoth is replacing the 1996 Broadway Express, a detachable quad chair, with a high-speed detachable six chair.
The old Chair 1 was from 1988 and had a capacity of 2,400 passengers per hour. It was retrofitted by Doppelmayr with upgraded terminals, grips, and hangers in 1996. The new Doppelmayr will have a capacity of 3,200 passengers per hour and will cut the travel time to 3:40 minutes, upping transport capacity by 33%. The new six-chair will feature enclosed top and bottom terminals, enabling chairs to be stored indoors during big storm cycles. The ability to store carriers indoors allows for timely lift openings after big storms, which in turn enables guests to enjoy the fresh powder faster.
New towers have gone in for the Chair 1 replacement project and everything is on track to be ready for the 2024-25 winter season. With 63 days to go until the season-opening at Mammoth, crews are putting a ton of work into preparing the mountain for the coming season.
