A massive landslide struck the ski slopes of the Foppolo/Carona (Brembo Ski) ski area in Italyย in the early afternoon of May 31, prompting a swift emergency response from local authorities. The landslide occurred on the slope leading downhill from Montebello towards the Cross-Valgussera Pass, causing significant damage and raising safety concerns. Thankfully, nobody was killed or injured.
According to the mayor’s office, the landslide’s front remains unstable due to heavy rainfall, necessitating immediate action. Monitoring efforts have been activated, and technicians from various institutions will conduct several inspections in the coming days to assess the extent of the damage and identify potential solutions for stabilizing the slope.
“We are working as efficiently and effectively as possible to find solutions for the settlement of the slope,” said the mayor in a statement. “Our hope is that the weather conditions will also improve, allowing us to restore the ski slope involved.”
Authorities have warned the public, urging individuals to avoid approaching the landslide area or crossing any installed protections, as the situation remains dangerous.ย
Foppolo/โCarona (Brembo Ski) is located in Val Brembana (Italy, Lombardy, Bergamo). 14 miles (22 kilometers) of slopes are available, and nine lifts transport guests. The winter sports area is between 3,805 feet (1,160 meters) and 7,096 feet (2,163 meters.)
Large areas of northern Italy were threatened with severe flooding as relentless heavy rainfall battered the region over the weekend. The prolonged rainfall has already led to flooding across northern Italy in recent weeks, saturating the ground and causing river levels to rise dangerously. Authorities issued orange thunderstorm warnings โ the second-highest level โ for the regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige, and Veneto, indicating a high risk of flash flooding, landslides, and other weather-related hazards.
Additionally, yellow heavy rainfall and thunderstorm warnings were issued for Piedmont and Tuscany, while yellow strong wind warnings were issued for several other regions, including Abruzzo, Basilicata, Campania, Lazio, Marche, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia, Tuscany, and Umbria.
