Conditions: Variable | Skies: Mostly Sunny
The Northeast was the lucky recipient of another winter storm this past Monday night. I knew there would be skiing in my future when I woke up to a half-foot of snow atop my car on Tuesday morning. After work, I headed to Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall, Connecticut, to check out the mountain in the daylight; my last trip to the ski area was in January for some night skiing.
The snow accumulation varied in the region with Mohawk Mountain receiving 3 inches by Tuesday morning with additional accumulation into the afternoon. When I arrived at the mountain in the late afternoon, cars were packed into the lot outside of the base lodge. It was bittersweet parking in the last row of the lot. My spot today was a far cry from the front row opening that I snagged when I visited last month, but I was happy to see the local mountain busy.
It was also great to see the mountain running full cylinder with all 27 trails open and all 8 lifts spinning. I spent my twilight session on the terrain off of the Arrowhead Triple Chair with a couple inches of powder still preserved on Timber, Chute, and Wildwood. The conditions havenโt been the best this winter at any East Coast mountain so this snow day play hit the spot.
On one of my last laps of the night, I rode up the lift with a fellow Indy Pass holder who was eager to chat about how he too has been skiing Mohawk after work this season. Itโs hard to beat the mountainโs accessibility to the stateโs metropolitan area for folks looking to sneak in laps after dark. And the mountain’s financial accessibility is another big plus, especially when using the Indy Pass.
