Report from Monday, January 8, 2024

The first Nor’easter of the year made ground-fall last weekend, making it the perfect time to visit Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall, Connecticut.

By the time I could get out on the roads, it was already Monday, but the Indy Pass made it easy for me to sneak in a few hours of night skiing after a long day’s work.

I hadn’t been night skiing since grade school when my dad would pull me out of class early on Fridays to head to our local mountain, so a night on my skis and under the sky felt nostalgic. Especially since my dad was game to take the drive down to Mohawk Mountain with me.

When I looked around Mohawk’s base lodge, I saw kids and their parents sharing the same experience as I did with my dad during those early years on skis. And that’s the it-factor for mountains like Mohawk; they are places for beginners to learn and veterans to recall their first time falling in love with the sport.

But good memories aren’t the only reason to visit Mohawk Mountain. I was impressed by the packed powder conditions after a slow start to the season here on the East Coast. Skyline Drive, Mohawk, and Timber were the go-to’s for the night, with several trails still unopened. I have no doubt that Mohawk Mountain’s remaining 17 trails will be open soon, with the season starting to shape up down the coast and 3-5 inches of snow expected early next week.
