A monster 60+mph gust of wind derailed the Amancay Gondola and Militares Chairlift at Cerro Catedral in Bariloche, Argentina today at about 2pm local time.

We were skiing at Cerro Catedral today and we hiked to the summit (summit chair, Nubes, was closed due to high wind) and we experienced possibly the strongest winds we’ve ever walked in up there today and it was wild and fun.

We had already left the mountain by the time this incident occurred today.

Catedral Alta Patagonia informs about the derailment due to wind

Bariloche, September 19th – Catedral Alta Patagonia informs that today at approximately 2pm, due to a strong wind gust over 100km/h (60mph), the Amancay Gondola and Militares Chairlift derailed.

The Amancay Gondola was closed to the public at the time of the derailment and only had pasengers who were downloading.  The derailment occurred in the ascending line.  After an evaluation by technicians, they were able to run the gondola and evacuate the people on board.

On the Militares Chairlift, the derailment occurred when the cable came off the pulleys but was caught by the tower’s safety device.  The lift was operating as conditional at the time of the derailment due to high winds.  After and evaluation by the maintenance team, the cable was repositioned on the pulleys and the lift was evacuated.

They worked together with EAMCEC to fix this incident, there were no injuries.

Catredral Alta Patagonia apologizes for any inconveniences that this situation caused.

Catedral Alta Patagonia informa sobre el descarrilamiento por viento
Bariloche, 19 septiembre. – Catedral Alta Patagonia informa que en el día de la fecha a las 14.00 horas aproximadamente, debido a una fuerte ráfaga de viento de más de 100 km/h, los medios de elevación Telecabina Amancay y la Telesilla Militares sufrieron un descarrilamiento.
La Telecabina Amancay se encontraba cerrada al público y sólo tenía pasajeros en la línea de descenso. El descarrilamiento fue de la línea de ascenso. Luego de una evaluación realizada por los técnicos se puso en marcha el medio de elevación y se procedió a la evacuación del mismo.
En cuanto a la Telesilla Militares, se produjo un descarrilamiento del cable que se desplazó fuera de las poleas quedando sostenido por el dispositivo de seguridad de la torre. El medio se encontraba operativo en forma condicional por viento. Luego de la evaluación del equipo de mantenimiento, se volvió a posicionar el cable en las poleas y se procedió a la evacuación de la línea a través del medio.
Se trabajó en conjunto con el EAMCEC en la coordinación de las acciones para la pronta solución a este incidente, no habiendo ningún herido.
Catedral Alta Patagonia lamenta los inconvenientes que esta situación ajena a su voluntad pudiera ocasionar.
