Report from March 15, 2025

I donโ€™t know why it stuck with me in my high school English class when we studied Julius Caesar, and there was the ominous warning to โ€œbeware the Ides of March,โ€ but it did.

Although March 15 can be associated with bad luck and misfortune, I planned a trip with my two boys to ski Mt. Bachelor, Oregon.

Itโ€™s good that Iโ€™m not superstitious because we were treated to the best powder day of the year.

Miracle March seemed to be delivering across much of the western U.S. and we woke up to the snow report showing 12 inches of new snow.

It was the first time my boys had ever visited Mt. Bachelor and they were stoked.

After some serious winter driving, we arrived in the parking lot to boot up while it continued to snow.

It would end up snowing ALL day.

As we took the first lift ride up Pine Marten Express, we heard the shrieks of joy from the riders who went before us.

On our first run, we dropped over the top of Red Chair and through the trees before traversing over to the cone and side stepping through deep powder to earn some turns.

It was totally worth it as we got untracked deep powder through the open field and then through the trees before ending at the bottom Red Chair.

My boys said it was the best run they had ever had, and it probably was in their young 12- and 10-year skiing careers.

The rest of the morning was spent exploring powder lines on the Pine Marten and Skyliner lifts.

It was a classic storm skiing day, so staying in the trees helped with visibility. Itโ€™s a good thing Mt. Bachelor is one other best resorts for tree skiing.

The snow and wind kept some lifts closed, but after lunch, we were lucky enough to have Outback Express open.

It was untracked powder all over again as demand for new terrain by all the visitors that day was delivered.

We darted through the trees with our thighs burning but not stopping because it was so good.

The terrain park was buried but we were just there for the fresh powder. | Photo: SnowBrains

I kept a close eye on both my boys, knowing that tree wells and snow immersion suffocation were at high risk.

After having our fun on Outback we headed back to the frontside of the mountain where we found our tracks from the morning had filled in and continued to ski superbly.

By 3:00 p.m. we were tired and dropped in to the West Village lodge for a hot chocolate before heading back to the town of Bend.

This day will not be soon forgotten.

Julius Caesar may have been assassinated on the Ides of March, but the only thing that was killed today was untracked powder.
