Report from March 28-29, 2025
One might think a ski trip at the end of March would be for spring conditions only. But then one might not be used to the majesty of the Pacific Northwest. Mt. Bachelor, just 20 miles from Bend, Oregon, graced us with fresh snow during both the days we visited this week.
The snow started on Thursday night and continued into the morning. With some midday breaks for blue skies and sun, the snow returned by mid-afternoon. Notably, what were fluffy flakes at the bottom of the backside lifts became corn snow by the time the chairlift reached mid-mountain. With additional snow overnight, Saturday was a veritable bluebird day.
The fresh snow re-animated a mountain that had received wetter precipitation earlier in the week. With the snow unlocking terrain, it was time to play. Local rider Jacob Heath stunned onlookers by throwing a โtame dogโ front flip off a wind-lip just under the Northwest Express.

Excitingly, the Mt. Bachelor team was busy constructing the course for the Big Wave Challenge. With massive mounds of snow in place, it was easy to envision riders surfing banked turns, quarter pipes, and other natural features. Next weekend, the competition will begin and crowds will get to enjoy a surf contest on snow.

These spring days bring the original reasons I started riding a monoski to the fore. Playing in the heavier snow made me feel like a boarder, cruising through the crud left my knees intact, and there was plenty of airtime to be had.
As much as people are enjoying the sun, Mt. Bachelor is not ready for winter to end. The next week brings colder temperatures and more precipitation.
