Vermont-based athlete Noah Dines has completed his mission to see how many human-powered vertical feet he could ascend in a year by setting a new world record of 3,590,097. Dines completed his record-breaking journey on December 30 (due to a leap year, 365 days after starting), surpassing his original goal and adding over a million feet to the previous record.
Dines, 30, began his quest on January 1, 2024, with an ambitious target of 3.28 million feet. He broke the former record of 2.5 million feet, set by Aaron Rice in 2016, on October 24.
Dines’ remarkable achievement equates to scaling Mount Everest more than 120 times. His journey took him across the United States and to the Southern Hemisphere, where he chased winter conditions to maximize his vertical gain.
Dines faced numerous challenges throughout his year-long endeavor, including extreme weather conditions, gear wear, and logistical hurdles. He sacrificed a lot during the year, focusing solely on his goal and often living out of his truck.

Dines averaged over 9,800 vertical feet daily and took only a few rest days throughout the year.
Besides the numbers and statistics he crushed this year, Dines told SnowBrains in an interview that the one thing he truly treasured throughout his journey was companionship and meeting new people. “The highlight really, more and more as the year has gone on, is the friends Iโve made along the way. Iโve met such incredible people from around the world. Talented, kind individuals.”
