Snowfall across the European Alps has brought some early-season delight to ski areas in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. While it has been great news for ski resorts, some motorists got caught out by the early snowfall.
The Flรผela Pass in Switzerland, which connects Davos to the Engadin Valley, has seen almost half a meter (20 inches) of snowfall in the last 48 hours. The mountain pass road had to be closed briefly to allow for road services to clear the road for traffic.
Likewise, the Stelvio Pass in Switzerland, which connects the Upper Valtellina with South Tyrol, saw masses of snow, surprising unsuspecting motorists on the mountain pass. A German group of Porsche enthusiasts got caught in the snowstorm, and some needed to be towed. The Stelvio Pass is popular with car and bike enthusiasts and was referred to by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear as โthe greatest driving road in the world.โ While it is a fun road to drive on, it pays to check the weather forecast before heading into the mountains.
While the snow has been less fun for motorists, it is certainly a welcome early gift for skiers and boarders. Stubaier Glacier announced that it will open more lifts and more ski areas for skiing and boarding thanks to the recent snowfall. As of today, October 5, the resort operates six runs: 1 Eisjochferner, 1b Eisjochzunge, 6 Windachferner, 7 Daunferner, 7a Skiweg Eisnase, and 20 Kogelferner. The resort started the 2024-25 season on September 20. The resort decided to bring the season forward after the big snowstorm in mid-September.
