Up to 24 centimeters (9.5 inches) of snow fell overnight in the European Alps. Predominantly, the south side of the Alps at the border between Switzerland and Italy saw the snowline drop to 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) overnight. Several Austrian and Swiss mountain passes saw snow, and the Furka and Susten Pass in Switzerland were closed due to snow on the roads.
This recent bout of snowfall comes just two weeks after the north side of the Alps was hammered by more than 1 meter (3 feet) of snowfall. While most of that snow melted in low-lying areas, the snow was able to linger at high altitudes, and several Austrian glacier ski resorts used the opportunity to open several weeks early for the season. The Pitztal Glacier is opening today, September 28, for the season.
