As of yesterday, Palisades Tahoe, California, had over two feet (26 inches) of May snow, prompting the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a rare Winter Storm Warning in May.

This late-season snowfall has pushed the resort’s total snowfall to 423 inches, surpassing its average yearly snowfall of 400 inches. The unexpected powder has allowed Palisades Tahoe to extend its ski season, with the resort now open seven days a week for skiing and riding through Memorial Day.

“According to Mother Nature, the saying now goes, ‘April showers bring May POWDER’!” the resort announced in a statement.

Palisades Tahoe is known as the Spring Skiing Capital of Lake Tahoe, and this year’s extended season is a testament to the resort’s reputation. Due to the new snowfall, the resort’s signature spring event, the 38th annual Cushing Crossing pond skim, has been pushed back from May 4 to May 11.

Skiers and riders are encouraged to check the resort’s live webcams and operations blog for the latest updates on conditions and events.
