A difficult 2019/20 winter, characterized by snowfall levels well below average, draws to a close at premier Chilean ski destination, Portillo.
Ski Portillo in the central Andes, is one among several major Chile and Argentina ski areas to be hit hard by what scientist confirm to be a 10-yr drought.
Thin cover closed these Andean ski resorts early:
- Los Puqios, Argentina closed on July 22nd
- La Parva, Chile closed September 1st
- Las Leรฑas, Argentina closed September 7th
- El Colorado, Chile closed Sept 8th
*La Arpa, Chile and Los Penitentes, Argentina were unable to open at all.
With lifts powering down at surrounding resorts, snow-faithful praise Ski Portillo for remaining open until September 21. The good fight to keep skiing made it possible for many families to holiday at the location during Chile’s independence day, September 18.
On a lighter note, these Southern Andean ski areas are enjoying solid 2019/20 Winter conditions:
- Cerro Catedral, Argentina
- Cerro Castor, Argentina
- Cerro Bayo, Argentina
- Chapelco, Argentina
- La Hoya, Argentina
- Nevados de Chillan, Chile
- Corralco, Chile
